2007 – 2008 Provisional Course Overview
As a provisional member of the Junior League of Greater Winter Haven, Inc. (JLGWH), you will participate in a year long, in-depth orientation course introducing you to the JLGWH and its role in the community we serve. Upon completion of your provisional course, you will become a fully active member and:
- Have a working knowledge of how the JLGWH operates and how it impacts the community
- Understand your role in the organization, your requirements, and have a better idea of what you might like to do in your future JLGWH years
- Have developed relationships within your provisional class and the larger membership, as well as an interest in the mission of the JLGWH.
- Have full JLGWH membership privileges, including voting rights.
Your provisional course will contain these elements:
General Membership Meetings
As a provisional, you must attend 5 of 8 general meetings, and participate in a spring interview with an assigned placement advisor. General Membership Meetings are held at the Winter Haven Garden Center on the second Tuesday of the month beginning at 6:30 pm.
Provisional Class Meetings
You will attend the provisional course meetings that will include your entire provisional class and may feature guest speakers. Topics may include JLGWH structure, history, organization operations, current projects of the JLGWH, the impact of the JLGWH, and an explanation of the nominating and placement processes. Meetings are held at the Winter Haven Garden Center on the second Tuesday of the month from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm.
Provisional Projects
Each year the provisional class participates in developing and executing a provisional-project and begin working on it in the Fall. This project is determined by the provisional class under the direction of the Board of Directors. This project is an excellent way to learn the logistics of operating within the JLGWH.
Breakfast With Santa
Each Fall, the provisional class participates in the JLGWH’s annual fundraiser Breakfast With Santa. Provisionals will be assigned to a specialized sub-committee and participate the day of the event.
Shadowing of Placement
Each provisional will be required to shadow an active JLGWH member for at least three hours of her placement’s service to the League. Shadowing allows you to witness ”behind the scene” operations of the JLGWH and to better understand how the placement benefit’s the League.
League Volunteer
Each provisional member will be required to participate in 5 hours of active volunteer service. This service can be completed during any JLGWH approved event.
